Gum Disease Prevention & Treatments
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a serious infection of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It is caused by bacteria that accumulate around and below the gum line forming a plaque or tartar. If left untreated, these bacteria can cause inflammation and damage to surround tissue leading to receding gums, loss of bone structure, tooth decay, and ultimately tooth loss. Regular professional dental cleaning appointments are necessary to maintain healthy gums and prevent gum disease from developing or worsening.
There are three stages of gum disease, from the least severe to the most severe – gingivitis, periodontitis, and advanced periodontitis. In periodontitis, also called gum disease or periodontal disease, bacteria grow in your mouth and eventually destroy the tissues around your teeth, resulting in tooth loss if left untreated. The difference between gingivitis and periodontal disease is that gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums around the teeth. In contrast, periodontal disease is an infection or inflammation of the bone below the gums.
As a result of food debris mixing with saliva and bacteria, gingivitis occurs, causing plaque to form on the teeth. If dental plaque and tartar aren’t removed by brushing with toothpaste and flossing, they can become mineralized and form tartar or calculus. Tartar is tough and can only be removed by a professional dental cleaning. When gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. People with periodontitis form pockets when their gums and bone pull away from their teeth. In these pockets, debris collects and becomes infected. The body’s immune system fights bacteria as they spread and grow below the gum line

Treatment Options Available At Manvel Dental & Implant Center
When plaque has built up and hardened into tartar, only your dentist or dental hygienist can remove it. At Manvel Dental & Implant Center, our dentists believe that by scheduling appointments twice a year, gum disease can be treated before it becomes more severe.
If you have advanced gum disease, scaling, and root planning may be done to treat the infected periodontal pockets. A dental hygienist can use an ultrasonic device to remove plaque, tartar, and food from on top of and underneath the gum line and manually brush the tooth/root surfaces until they are clean and free of any ailments. Lasers may also be utilized to take away any tartar build-up. Suppose you have moderate to severe periodontitis (periodontal pockets more than 5 millimeters deep). In that case, a periodontist could recommend a gingival flap surgery to reduce those pockets and perform a bone grafting procedure to replenish lost bones.
An essential goal of gum disease treatment is reattaching healthy gums to teeth, reducing swelling, reducing pocket depth, decreasing infection risk, and stopping disease progression. A person’s treatment options depend on the stage of their disease, how well they responded to earlier treatments, and how well they are feeling. In addition, there are nonsurgical treatments that control bacterial growth, as well as surgical treatments to restore support structures.
